Whenever I have a little 10-minute open period in my day, my first instinct is to watch an Architectural Digest Open Door segment. For those who might not share my fascination (yet!), AD’s Open Door segment features different celebrities and their homes. The 10 - 15 minute video is a home walk-through, where the celebrity shares more about the house, their design inspiration, and what they love about their space. Some Reddit theorists say that celebrities open up their houses to AD when they’re about to sell the property or when they need a little publicity boost before a project comes out. As someone who has watched almost all of the AD Open Door segments, these are the three that I think should not be missed. Andiamo!

As if you needed another reason to love Lenny Kravitz! His fazenda is absolutely beautiful and seeing this home tour might have been the start of a dream of mine (more details coming next week, I promise). This property is not only filled with a stunning home, soccer pitch, guest house, pool, and outdoor living spaces, it’s also a working farm. The beauty of the landscape is breathtaking and beyond anything I’ve seen. There is so much history, both in the property and also in the pieces he has throughout the home (a chair that formerly belonged to Andy Warhol, photos of his family members, and more). If a genie could grant me a wish, it would be to spend two weeks on this property, soaking up the beauty and wisdom from the area and Lenny himself.

I have never felt love emanate through a screen more than when I watched Jon and Suleika’s tour. Truly, the love they have for each other and the love they poured into their home shines through. One of the comments on the video says it best “In a country obsessed with productivity, I am deeply moved to see they created a sanctuary for storytelling, contemplation, magic, resting and napping, honoring those who came before them, future visioning, animism and renaissance.” Simply said, this home brought me joy.
Okay, I love her home. The Spanish style architecture speaks to me and I appreciated how much of the home felt original. It’s so cozy and peaceful and feels very lived in. The arched doorways are beautiful. I also love how she turned the movie theater into a painting room. A classic celebrity move! I think this was one of the first times where I really understood the LA appeal with indoor/outdoor living.
Honorable Mentions: Liv Tyler's Gut-Renovated NYC Brownstone, Sienna Miller's Secluded Country Cottage, and Nina Dobrev's 1920's Spanish-Style Home (I love the kitchen vent that she has).
I’m in a home design inspiration phase right now. There’s something I really enjoy about learning about the how and why behind people’s spaces, the people they worked with, and the history of the home itself. Continuing to intentionally design my space is one of my 2024-2025 goals and watching these AD videos is one way I collect inspiration. Even if it’s just a paint color, a mirror, or a feeling embodied, there’s usually at least one takeaway from each video. This is my suggestion to you - can you take one piece of inspiration from the spaces you’re in this week? Maybe it’s how the light hits the wall, or the music being played. Make note of it and see if there are any patterns.
